Colossians Chapter 3

(Colossians 3:1 [KJV])
If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

  • Forget the "touch not, taste not" mentality Paul previously mentioned in chapter two
  • Think on heavenly thoughts, think about your future home, and Who got you there.
  • Risen with Christ. Positionally, we already are in Heaven to God, Who dwells in eternity and not time like us mortals
  • Heaven is above us, hell beneath us

(Colossians 3:2 [KJV])
Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

  • We are in this world and not of it. All of the things on the earth will die, burn
  • All of the things in Heaven are eternal, perfect, everlasting.
  • Paul said this in his epistle to Philippi, below
  • Take care of what is here as good stewards of all God gives us, but remember that they are not the end of all things, but are temporal

(Philippians 4:8 [KJV])
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things [are] honest, whatsoever things [are] just, whatsoever things [are] pure, whatsoever things [are] lovely, whatsoever things [are] of good report; if [there be] any virtue, and if [there be] any praise, think on these things.

(Colossians 3:3 [KJV])
For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

  • How can a man be dead while alive? It is a spiritual description of our spiritual condition, not literally, not physical-YET
  • Our old self, the mortal body is dead to God, our new self is alive to God, Who already sees a glorified body awaiting us, in Christ
  • When the Father looks at us, He sees Jesus, not us, as we are hid in Jesus Christ
  • Our life is hid in Christ; our life is not our own, our life here is dead, to self
  • Dead to this life means a crucified life. We need to act like it more.

(Colossians 3:4 [KJV])
When Christ, [who is] our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

  • There is no "ifs" or "maybes" to this, we SHALL appear with Him, like Him, in glory, in glorified bodies
  • Jesus Christ is our life, through His own Blood shed for us, not our own air we breathe, not our own blood which flows. The new life is in the Blood (of Christ)
  • The life is in the blood, our blood, in this life, but it and us will die one day, so it is for a time only.

(Colossians 3:5,6 [KJV])
Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:

  • Many Christians think idolatry is bowing down to manmade idols of gold, silver, chrome, etc. It is putting anything before God, here putting ourselves, our wants, desires, lusts
  • Fornication: Relations outside of marriage-before marriage, during it, after a divorce, which is not even Scriptural
  • Uncleanness: Lewdness, incontinence
  • Inordinate affection: Sodomy, homosexuality, lesbianism
  • Concupiscence: fleshly, carnal, worldly-EVIL
  • Covetousness: Jealously wanting what someone else has

UNCLE'ANNESS, n.
  1. Foulness; dirtiness; filthiness.
Be not troublesome to thyself or to others by uncleanness.
  2. Want of ritual or ceremonial purity. Lev 15.
  3. Moral impurity; defilement by sin; sinfulness.
I will save you from all your uncleanness. Ezek 36.
  4. Lewdness; incontinence. Col 3. 2 Pet 2.

CONCUPISCENCE, n. [L., to covet or lust after, to desire or covet.] Lust; unlawful or irregular desire of sexual pleasure. In a more general sense, the coveting of carnal things, or an irregular appetite for worldly good; inclination for unlawful enjoyments.
We know even secret concupiscence to be sin.
Sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence.
Rom 7.

(Colossians 3:7 [KJV])
In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.

  • The Colossians lived in the sins listed above. It was their walk, their life.
  • They walked "some time", which means that they got saved later in life, as adults

(Colossians 3:8 [KJV])
But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

  • Anger leads to wrath, which is violent anger
  • Malice is "Extreme enmity of heart, or malevolence; a disposition to injure others without cause, from mere personal gratification or from a spirit of revenge; unprovoked malignity or spite."
  • Blasphemy is against God directly, filthy communication is cussing, sexual connotations towards others, against God.

WRATH, n. [L.]
  1. Violent anger; vehement exasperation; indignation; as the wrath of Achilles.
When the wrath of king Ahasuerus was appeased--Est 2.
    O Lord--in wrath remember mercy. Hab 3.
  2. The effects of anger. Prov 27.
  3. The just punishment of an offense or crime. Rom 8.
Gods wrath, in Scripture, is his holy and just indignation against sin. Rom 1.

(Colossians 3:9 [KJV])
Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

  • Lying is part of our past, our old man. It is a verbal action, not physical.
  • "with his deeds" means simply that the lying led to dishonest acts which are physical

(Colossians 3:10 [KJV])
And have put on the new [man], which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

  • We were originally, as mankind, created in God's Image (spirituality, will, intellect, emotion, etc.)
  • When we fell, the spiritual part of that was dead, now "created" (more like re-molded) in the image of our flesh, the enemy, the world, with a bent away from God

(Colossians 3:11 [KJV])
Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond [nor] free: but Christ [is] all, and in all.

  • In the original creation of Adam and Eve, there was no Israel (Jew) nor Gentile nations, just people until Abraham was called, Israel was made through his descendants only through Isaac and Jacob)
  • No law of circumcision, no enemies of Israel yet, just God, Adam, Eve, the serpent in the garden
  • No captivity to Egypt, Babylonia, Rome, or anyone else. We are free in Christ, from sin, free to not sin. Our enslaving chains were broken
  • We are no longer bound to our earthly culture in any point it differs, steers us away from God's Word
  • We are free from the law of sin and death, but just not the consequence of our sin in this life, since we are still here in the flesh, as now spiritual beings
  • If not, we would be raptured immediately, disappear from earth instantly and be in HEaven in a moment the moment we got saved. All of us. As is plainly evident, that doesn ot happen

(Colossians 3:12 [KJV])
Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

  • Mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering (suffering for a long time) are opposites to anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication, lying.
  • We were chosen for this purpose, declared righteous and holy in God's eyes (because we are IN Christ), but we cannot serve God and man without these qualities, traits, characteristics.
  • This is the flesh, the old man, against the spirit, the new man

(Colossians 3:13 [KJV])
Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also [do] ye.

  • Putting up with and enduring each other....often not an easy task.
  • We do not have to agree, we do not have to fellowship, we often need to expose, we often need to correct heresy with God's Word, we may even offend the weak by telling them the truth, yet all of the while forgiving them.

(Colossians 3:14 [KJV])
And above all these things [put on] charity, which is the bond of perfectness.

  • If we can love the unlovable, we reflect Jesus Christ, as that was and is our condition our hapless state and estate
  • This is what distinguishes us from the world, this ability
  • Above all of the mercy and kindness, love, as a verb (action), even if it is not a noun (feeling)

(Colossians 3:15 [KJV])
And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

  • Peace can only come from God, true peace, that is
  • The world always seems to give fake peace, and will especially do so in the last days, in the Great Tribulation
  • Everyone WANTS peace, but are unwilling to do what it takes to ACHIEVE it, leaving that work to others

FALSE PEACE(S)

(Jeremiah 6:14 [KJV])
They have healed also the hurt [of the daughter] of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when [there is] no peace.

(Jeremiah 8:11 [KJV])
For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when [there is] no peace.

(Ezekiel 13:10 [KJV])
Because, even because they have seduced my people, saying, Peace; and [there was] no peace; and one built up a wall, and, lo, others daubed it with untempered [morter]:

(1 Thessalonians 5:3 [KJV])
For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

(Colossians 3:16 [KJV])
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

  • The Word was given to us, but that is not all. To make it work in our lives, it must dwell in us.
  • The only way to have the word of Christ dwell in us is to read, study and memorize it
  • Notice it does not say the WORDS of Christ, but is singular, referring to the Word of God, cover to cover.
  • To admonish someone is to correct their error(s), and errors cause disunity. The only way to have unity is to have the same Word of God, believing what it says, in context, not privately interpreted.
  • The psalms, hymns, spiritual songs are for us to comfort ourselves when it is grievous to admonish (it always is), especially when that admonition is not well received, nor received at all

ADMON'ISH, v.t. [L. admoneo, ad and moneo, to teach, warn, admonish.]
  1. To warn or notify of a fault; to reprove with mildness.
Count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother. 2 Th 3.
  2. To counsel against wrong practices; to caution or advise.
Admonish one another in psalms and hymns. Col 3.
  3. To instruct or direct.
Moses was admonished of God, when he was about to make the tabernacle. Heb 8.
  4. In ecclesiastical affairs, to reprove a member of the church for a fault, either publicly or privately; the first step of church discipline. It is followed by of, or against; as, to admonish of a fault committed, or against committing a fault. It has a like use in colleges.

(Colossians 3:17 [KJV])
And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, [do] all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

  • Add to that the why of all that we do, which is to glorify God
  • It is why mankind was created at all
  • "Lord Jesus....God and the Father by him", is a verse which again shows clearly the Deity of Christ and the Trinity (Jesus, God (Spirit), the Father
  • In word or deed means first in our mind, as an attitude of thanksgiving

(Colossians 3:18 [KJV])
Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.

  • This is the role of the wife in marriage, which is not about, as has been lied to all of us, equality in any way
  • This pattern started in the garden with the first marriage and is God's pattern to this day, regardless of any ideas contrary to this, which are wrong, as this is right, as submission is today considered evil, the woman wanting to lord it over the man since the radical, evil 60s.
  • "your own husbands", not someone else's, every woman having her own
  • This is the only way marriage truly works, as in one-ly, one way, not even two
  • Submission is voluntary for women by their own will being in submission to Christ, but a commandment from God to be obeyed

SUBMIT', v.t. [L. submitto; sub, under, and mitto, to send.]
  1. To let down; to cause to sink or lower.
Sometimes the hill submits itself a while. [This use of the word is nearly or wholly obsolete.]
  2. To yield, resign or surrender to the power, will or authority of another; with the reciprocal pronoun.
Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hand. Gen 16.
Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands. Eph 5. Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man. 1 Pet 2.
  3. To refer; to leave or commit to the discretion of judgment of another; as, to submit a controversy to arbitrators; to submit a question to the court.

SUBMIT', v.i. To surrender; to yield one's person to the power of another; to give up resistance. The enemy submitted. The revolted provinces presently submitted.
  1. To yield one's opinion to the opinion or authority of another. On hearing the opinion of the court, the counsel submitted without further argument.
  2. To be subject; to acquiesce in the authority of another.
To thy husband's will Thine shall submit--
  3. To be submissive; to yield without murmuring.
Our religion requires us--to submit to pain, disgrace and even death.
  4. People want husbands to love their wives because God does. But mention that wives have to submit and that is "old, outdated, archaic, old testament, no longer applicable"

(Colossians 3:19 [KJV])
Husbands, love [your] wives, and be not bitter against them.

  • Love is a verb here, not a noun. If you can love your enemies (feelings aside), you can love your wife, feelings aside
  • Again, this is a role, a pattern established by the One Who created us, not by mankind
  • Bitterness is harbored ill will, which is unhealthy for relationships and our bodies

(Colossians 3:20 [KJV])
Children, obey [your] parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.

  • This is the final part of the family structure initiated, created, ordained by God-THE ONLY ONE.
  • Man, woman, husband, wife, children
  • Children today are very sassy, impudent, disobedient, disrespectful, nasty, dangerous, downright too often deadly
  • This was prophesied 2,000 years ago by Paul himself.
  • It is why young people today die so young, demand so much, are lazy, wildly ignorant, especially in our cities, especially the longer they have been in government re-education camps (government "schools").

DISOBEDIENCE TO PARENTS

(Matthew 15:3-6 [KJV])
But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to [his] father or [his] mother, [It is] a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; And honour not his father or his mother, [he shall be free]. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.

(Exodus 20:12 [KJV])
Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

(Romans 1:30 [KJV])
Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

This verse (Romans 1:30) is not so much a prophesy, but rather an indictment on any society that denies God, whether before they acknowledged Him or not.

(2 Timothy 3:2 [KJV])
For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

(Colossians 3:21 [KJV])
Fathers, provoke not your children [to anger], lest they be discouraged.

  • Fathers are to run the household, not run it into the ground by unnecessarily being mean, nasty
  • Discipline is not provoking, punishment is not provoking
  • Words mostly, but actions as well can do this
  • God tells us how to properly raise children in Ephesians 6 below

PROVO'KE, v.t. [L.provoco, to call forth; pro and voco, to call.]
  1. To call into action; to arouse; to excite; as, to provoke anger or wrath by offensive words or by injury; to provoke war.
  2. To make angry; to offend; to incense; to enrage.
Ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath.
Often provoked by the insolence of some of the bishops--
    Eph 6.
  3. To excite; to cause; as, to provoke perspiration; to provoke a smile.
  4. To excite; to stimulate; to increase.
The taste of pleasure provokes the appetite, and every successive indulgence of vice which is to form a habit, is easier than the last.
  5. To challenge.
He now provokes the sea-gods from the shore.
  6. To move; to incite; to stir up; to induce by motives. Rom 10.
Let us consider one another to provoke to love and to good works. Heb 10.
  7. To incite; to rouse; as, to provoke one to anger. Deu 32.

PROVO'KE, v.i. To appeal. [A Latinism, not used.]

(Ephesians 6:1-4 [KJV])
Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

(Colossians 3:22 [KJV])
Servants, obey in all things [your] masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God:

  • A servant is an employee by choice, the master is the boss, manger, etc.
  • The NKJV falsely uses the word "bondservant", which means slave
  • As always, it is incorrect, and the word "servant" is neither archaic nor needed to be updated to an archaic word like "bondservant'
  • God is our ultimate master, which is why Paul says "masters in the flesh" here
  • "Eyeservice" is what one does when the boss is watching. Real service involves good character and is what one does when the boss is not there, not watching.
  • "Eyeservice" is done by menpleasers who are doing anything for selfish reasons, to serve self, not others, not their master. Today people call them "brown nosers"
  • Menpleasers are fake, phony, halfhearted, faking, feigning working. It is all for show, to keep up appearances
  • Singleness is devotion to the master, the one master

SIN'GLENESS, n.
  1. The state of being one only or separate from all others; the opposite of doubleness, complication or multiplicity.
  2. Simplicity; sincerity; purity of mind or purpose; freedom from duplicity; as singleness of belief; singleness of heart.

(Colossians 3:23,24 [KJV])
And whatsoever ye do, do [it] heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.

  • When we do it for the LORD, we do it for the service of men, starting with the earthly master, and fellow employees, parents, customers, friends, strangers, etc.
  • Heartily is literally to the LORD, full heartedly, not halfhearted, but all out, the best we can do, with all of our strength
  • Putting God first means we will do it for men, and that moral compass will guide us if we wind up with a master who asks us to do wrong, evil, vile, in which case we are free from this commandment; this is our only exception
  • Mankind can give temporal rewards of a raise, a promotion, but it is not eternal like the rewards from God Himself which will never perish, fade

(Colossians 3:25 [KJV])
But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.

  • Two different rewards, for good and for evil.
  • God sees the heart. You do good FOR Him as His child? Rewards accordingly
  • You spend your life doing evil against Him as a child of the enemy? Just rewards.

THE TWO REWARDS

From the verses listed below, one can see that:

  • God was Abraham's reward, and is now ours also
  • It means to render back, as is good for evil/evil for good
  • The Levitical priesthood got their needs met as a reward for their service
  • Ill gotten gain is a reward for evil doings
  • Mankind cannot reward God; only the reverse is true
  • Evil is the reward from God for evil done, as the consequence of sin
  • Children are our reward from God, and to be treated as such
  • The reward of the wicked is in this life, most certainly, but ends at their death, and they get a new reward that they earned-eternal death, flames of hell
