Revelation Chapter 9

(Revelation 9:1 )
And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.
  • Obviously not a real star in this case, but an angel
  • This is numbers five, six, seven of the seven trumpets, and the angel in chapter 8 just announced woe for these last three trumpets, as if it was not bad enough as it is
(Revelation 8:13 )
And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!

(Revelation 9:2 )
And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.
  • This pit is the ultimate destination for the enemy of all of us, through the Millenial Kingdom
(Revelation 20:1-3 )
And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a littleseason.

(Revelation 9:3 )
And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.

  • These are obviously created locusts unlike normal locusts
(Revelation 9:4 )
And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.

  • This is the 144,000 of the tribes of the nation of Israel
(Revelation 7:3 )
Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.

(Ezekiel 9:4 )
And the LORD said unto him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof.

(Revelation 9:5 )
And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.

  • It was given them, it was not just inherent, but by ability and permission, just like not hurting the ones with the seals in their foreheads
  • The pain of a scorpion sting for five months straight. Anyone would want to die
(Revelation 9:6 )
And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.

  • The smaller the scorpion, generally the worse the sting and venom
  • Scorpion stings are nto even the most painful, but imagine the pain for that long!
(Revelation 9:7-10 )
And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men. And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions. And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle.
And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months.

  • Human-like characteristics , both male and female, and golden crowns
  • Teeth of lions means they sting AND bite!
  • Horses arrayed for battle are in formation, with protective shields, metal breastplates-try swatting one!
  • The wings of many locusts attacking in the deserts and plains of Africa is a buzz, not a rumbling wheel noise
  • These are eager destroyers, RUNNING into battle
(Revelation 9:11-12 )
And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon. One woe is past; and, behold, there come two woes more hereafter.

  • If wicked man can have a satanic king over him in the end, so can locusts which are wicked
(Revelation 9:13-14 )
And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates.

  • Apparently right now these angels are there, waiting today, for that day
(Revelation 9:15 )
And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men.

  • Thirteen months, one day, one hour to kill men
  • Or, one to kill for an hour, one to kill for a day, one to kill for a month, one to kill for a year
(Revelation 9:16-17 )
And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them. And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone.

  • This is two hundred million devil horsemen on demonic horses
  • The description is literal, the creatures are literal, and supernatural, devilish
  • This is hell warring against the earth
(Revelation 9:18 )
By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths.

  • This is a decimation of the life of mankind on earth
(Revelation 9:19 )
For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt.

  • Again a description of a supernatural creature, not like anything found on earth
(Revelation 9:20-21 )
And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.

  • Imagine seeing a third of the people killed and not repenting
  • This is the reason God feels it so necessary to wipe people from the earth in judgment,
    • Sinful nature to be destroyed
    • Idolatry-false idol worship
    • Murder, lying, adultery, witchcraft
    • Utter refusal to repent
    • Pride
    • Denial of the True God in every way, even after seeing His undeniable judgments to date before their eyes
    • This is at least Commandments 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10 accounted here, at a minimum
1.) I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

2.)Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

3.) Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

4.) Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

5.) Thou shalt not kill.

6.) Thou shalt not commit adultery.

7.) Thou shalt not steal.

8.) Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

9.) Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house,

10.) thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.
