1 John Chapter 2

(1 John 2:1)
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
  • The purpose of the writing this is to show them that they can break the bondage of sin
  • The other purpose is to show that they will still sin and be sinners, but that they have a lawyer defending them to get them off

(1 John 2:2)
And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
  • Jesus Christ took our wrath of God on Himself, and paid our debt, so we would not have to
  • He put us in good standing with the Judge
  • He did this for all, but all will not accept it

PROPITIATION, n. propisia'shon.
  1. The act of appeasing wrath and conciliating the favor of an offended person; the act of making propitious.
  2. In theology, the atonement or atoning sacrifice offered to God to assuage his wrath and render him propitious to sinners. Christ is the propitiation for the sins of men. Rom 3. 1 John 2.
(1 John 2:3)
And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
  • We do not keep them to be saved, we keep them to show that we ARE saved
  • We know that we know, meaning it is a 100% certainty in our minds

(1 John 2:4)
He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
  • If there is no change in a person's life from before they "got saved", they did not get saved, but rather gave lip service, said "a sinner's prayer (not found in Scripture), "came forward" (not found in Scripture), "bowed their head and raised their hand " (not found in Scripture), etc.
  • The cast seed did not fall on fertile ground, but on rocky soil, or the birds came and took the seed, or it was shallow, sprouted, was not rooted, and withered, died.

(1 John 2:5)
But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
  • The love of God is shown perfectly when we obey God
  • This would be our love to God and our love to others in all circumstances
  • The Holy Ghost in us will affirm our salvation, more so and without doubt as we obey

(1 John 2:6)
He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
  • We are to walk like Jesus walked, blameless before men
  • We should first live for Christ visibly, openly, because we profess Christ publicly with our mouth and the world sees both
  • This is because he left us an example of how, and expects us to walk as He walked, in His footsteps

(John 13:15)
For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.

(1 Peter 2:21)
For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

(1 John 2:7)
Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.
  • By this time in Scripture, this is just a necessary repeat that we should love one another

(John 13:34-35)
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

(1 John 2:8)
Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.
  • What John means is that he will repeat the old commandment in a different way, as an example and instruction of how to do it
  • Before the LORD Jesus Christ came, the world was dark, but He is the Light of the World

(John 8:12)
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

(John 9:5)
As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

(1 John 2:9)
He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.
  • In other words, hatred is darkness, hatred comes from darkness, and brings us darkness
  • If we love our brother who knows already God's love, then how much more to show the world God's love by loving them who are unlovable and not our brethren?

(1 John 2:10)
He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
  • By not putting a stumblingblock in front of or being a stumblingblock to others with our lives, we are showing love
  • Giving no chance of stumbling to a brother or sister, not to mention unbelievers is loving indeed

(1 John 2:11)
But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.
  • The darkness of hell, the darkness of the enemy, is what is in hatred, where it resides
  • There is hatred of sin, not to be confused. There is righteous anger that even Jesus had, not to be confused with abject, warranted or unwarranted, hatred
  • When one walks in the dark, they bump into all sorts of nasty things, and do not know what they are for lack of sight
  • They stumble at their own stumblingblock, which is hatred
  • Publicly pointing out and rebuking sin before even an entire gathering of saints is NOT hatred, either, and is what Paul did, Jesus did, etc.

(1 Timothy 5:20)
Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.

See Matthew 23, Luke 11

(Matthew 21:12)
And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,

(John 2:14-17)
And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables; And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise. And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.

(1 John 2:12)
I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake.
  • Only because of Jesus Christ are we all forgiven
  • His Name is above all names, powerful to forgive anyone who wants forgiveness, but this is exclusive to His Name, His children
  • Available to all people, accepted by many, but not all, a gift to be freely received or freely rejected

(John 2:23)
Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.

(Matthew 12:18-21)
Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles. He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.
A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory. And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.

(Luke 24:46-47)
And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

(John 2:23)
Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.

(Acts 3:16)
And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.

(1 John 2:13)
I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.
  • Fathers, sons, and their sons, grandchildren
  • Knowing is overcoming, and knowing and overcoming give us access to the Father through the Son
  • Jesus Christ is "from the beginning", as in the Creation, the Everlasting

(1 John 2:14)
I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.
  • Jesus Christ is from the beginning
  • Jesus Christ is the Creator
  • We are strong because we have the word in us (know it and memorized it), which is how we overcome the enemy
  • it is how Jesus overcame the temptations of the enemy as well, "It is written" (Luke 4, Matthew 4)

(Micah 5:2)
But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

(John 1:1-3)
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Later....

(John 1:14)
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

JESUS OVERCAME TEMPTATION

Same account is in Matthew 4

(Luke 4:1)
And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered. And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.
And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.
If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence: For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.

(1 John 2:15)
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
  • This is not the people of the world, but the world system, the ways of the world
  • This is because this world is sensual, sinful, lustful, carnal, corrupt, fleshly, mortal, temporal
  • One cannot love both, as loving one means to serve one and reject the other, since they are opposites, at odds, adversarial.....it is God or the World, never both simultaneously

(Matthew 6:24)
No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

(Luke 16:13)
No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

(1 John 2:16)
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
  • This world system, with its things contained in it, are the same trap as was in the garden tempting Eve
  • The lust of the flesh for Eve was that it was "good for food"
  • The lust of the eyes for Eve was that"it was pleasant to the eyes", as in a pretty appearance, presentation
  • The pride of life for Eve was "a tree to be desired to make one wise"
  • Man seeks worldly wisdom daily, not God's wisdom. God does not want us to be stupid or ignorant, just not fooled, worshipping this life and the things in it

(Genesis 3:6)
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

(1 Corinthians 8:1)
Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.

(1 John 2:17)
And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
  • This is the temporal and carnal nature of this natural world, while we wait for a supernatural one.
  • Everything listed above in the last tow verses will be gone in the new heaven and new earth....no more lust of the eyes, flesh, pride of life

(1 John 2:18)
Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
  • Out of 6,000-7,000 years of recorded history, the last 2,000 are indeed the last days, too long for our liking sometimes
  • That spirit of the antichrist has been around since the garden and will continue until he is destroyed
  • Fact is that many people are antichrist, a trend for many millennia now.

(John 15:18)
If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.

(John 15:25)
But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

(Psalms 35:19)
Let not them that are mine enemies wrongfully rejoice over me: neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause.

(Psalms 69:4)
They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head: they that would destroy me, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored that which I took not away.

(1 John 2:19)
They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
  • This is the person who raises a hand at an altar call, for a multitude of reasons, and does not actually mean it, or get saved
  • It is living out the parable of the sower and the seed

Not Of Us

  1. The seed is sown everywhere, in all hearts, this knowledge of God
  2. The places, soils (hearts) vary, according to the exercise of one's will
  3. Some go back to family, friend and are mocked, ridiculed, tested, and they choose to reject the Gospel they heard
  4. Some "accept the Gospel" and "get saved" and wither away quickly, as that is all that they do (get scorched by the sun for no roots)
  5. Some "accept the Gospel" and "get saved" until problems, persecution arise, then show they were "saved", not saved
  6. Some truly get saved, get discipled, grow deep roots of faith on the Solid Rock of Ages, the LORD Jesus Christ and grow in their faith, despite family, friends, persecution of enemies, testings, etc.

(Matthew 13:3-23)
And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth:
And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:
For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.
Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

(1 John 2:20)
But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
  • That is them, but we are speaking to you, fellow believers, brethren, sisters, brothers in Christ
  • That is what the world does, but YOU.........no way!
  • This unction we have is our calling, our anointing, and it is from God, not the world
  • Everything important to go through this life is available to us through God's Word

UNC'TION, n. [L. unctio, from ungo, to anoint.]
  1. The act of anointing.
  2. Unguent; ointment. [Unusual.]
  3. The act of anointing medically; as mercurial unction.
  4. Any thing softening or lenitive.
  5. That which excites piety and devotion.
  6. Richness of gracious affections.
  7. Divine or sanctifying grace. 1 John 1.
Extreme unction, the rite of anointing in the last hours; or the application of sacred oil to the parts where the five senses reside.
(1 John 2:21)
I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.
  • John is not writing to give them the Gospel truth, but because he already did, or someone else did, and they need it reaffirmed, and need themselves to be encouraged
  • They can discern between truth and lies, and he expects them to

(1 John 2:22)
Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
  • The difference in truth and lies is what one does with Jesus Christ, what one believes about Jesus Christ
  • Lip service says that Jesus Christ is one with God the Father, and is walking, thinking in the same spirit as the anti-Christ (that spirit being the devil)
  • They say they believe in Jesus, but not Jesus "CHRIST"; they say they believe in "A" "christ", but not THE CHRIST

(1 John 2:23)
Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.
  • Jesus Christ and the Father are one, as Jesus said, and this affirms that
  • This is a huge thrust of John's Gospel itself, same words, same style

JESUS CHRIST: ONE WITH THE FATHER

(John 10:30)
I and my Father are one.

(John 14:9-11)
Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.

(John 12:45)
And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.

(1 John 2:24)
Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.
  • He is speaking of the truth they heard from the beginning, from the context, specifically verse twenty one
  • If we dwell in the truth, we walk in the Spirit, as with the Father and the Son

(1 John 2:25)
And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.
  • This is the end of the Gospel for us, the gift we got at that moment of salvation
  • This is from the God Who cannot lie

(Titus 1:2)
In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

(Numbers 23:19)
God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

(1 John 2:26)
These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.
  • They were seduced by those who denied the above, "No lie is of the truth" (v.21)
  • These little spirits of antichrist were infiltrating the churches, spreading lies, half-truths (even worse)
  • This same tactic is the same throughout history, from the subtlety of the serpent in the Garden of Eden seducing Eve

(1 John 2:27)
But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
  • If any man has the Holy Spirit in them, then they can learn from God by studying His Word and words, and needs no man to teach him
  • he, the Holy Spirit, is the only way to not be deceived by the false teachers and teachings of this world

(1 John 2:28)
And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.
  • Walk in the Spirit, be in Jesus Christ, stay in Jesus Christ, trust Jesus Christ only for life and truth
  • the shame will come to the unbelievers when Jesus Christ comes back, not at the Rapture, but the Second Coming

(Revelation 1:7)
Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.

(1 John 2:29)
If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.
  • This knowledge that Jesus Christ is righteous can only be in the mind and heart of a believer, that Jesus Christ is holy.
